Foods for Weight Loss


"Lose weight" is a popular new year's resolution for many people. Going for a jog or heading to the gym is a great start, but what we put in our bodies is just as important. Processed foods, oily snacks, and sugary drinks aren't helpful, we get that, so what really makes the list of foods for weight loss?


Well, it's almost no surprise that the usual suspects are back in the news. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are first in line. Nuts and berries for snacks. Coffee, tea, and water when you're thirsty. Sure. Nothing new here. But when we dug a little deeper, we actually found a few interesting foods that we didn't naturally think for weight loss.


Eggs - Most people think high cholesterol when we think of eggs. Though eggs can lead to high levels of bad cholesterol, new studies suggest that moderation (7 - 12 eggs per week) is worth the health benefits. Eggs are low calorie, low carbs, high protein, and naturally full of healthy fats, antioxidants, and amino acids. This means they can help you feel more full while eating less but gaining nutrients.


Dark Chocolate - This one sounds too good to be true. Studies show that dark chocolate does contain a high amount of nutrients and anti-oxidants, which are both known to help lower blood pressure and fight against other health issues, but we feel like this should be a very light and occasional treat. The more cacao and less milk, the better. Just think of it though, it's not too bad if we could just eat dark chocolate and lose weight all day, right?


Potatoes - With all the low carb diets nowadays, potatoes didn't seem like it would make any weight loss food list. But if you're focused more on eating healthy foods and less calories, potatoes can be a good choice. They're high in essential nutrients like potassium and potatoes help you feel fuller than other foods. Sweet potatoes count too!


Mustard - A low calorie condiment that helps with weight loss. Some studies indicate that adding mustard can help increase your metabolism by 25% for hours after consumption. Yellow mustard often contains turmeric as well. Chili peppers and Cayenne pepper also do the trick. They all contain a nutrient called Capsaicin, which helps increase your internal body temperature and stimulate your metabolism.


Sauerkraut - It's a probiotic and a prebiotic, meaning it's good for your gut. Studies are now showing that gut health and promoting good bacteria in your gut can help with digestion, bloating, and weight loss. It's the fermentation process that's key, so other fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, and miso can be good for weight loss too.

  • Avocados

  • Blueberries (and other berries)

  • Cinnamon

  • Green Tea

  • Parmesan Cheese

  • Rye Bread

  • Salmon

  • Tofu

Of course, we have to also bring up almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. These are great for your weight loss journey too. And to be honest, we're absolutely loving this season's Chandler walnuts right now. Not the lightest colored harvest we've ever had but the flavor is amazing!


There are so many more delicious, whole foods out that can help with weight loss. Keep to moderation, keep learning, and keep away from the stuff you know that's bad for you. There's a ton of flavors to taste and recipes to try. There are excellent choices out there. =)
